A leading beauty blogger has revealed how you can look good without any makeup on, now that more of us are working from home and having ‘makeup-free’ days.
Tina Yong, from Sydney, said looking good without any makeup requires a bit of effort, but if you get organised in advance, you’ll never be caught unawares if you suddenly need to go on camera for a Zoom meeting or need to meet a friend unexpectedly.
‘There are so many tips and tricks for looking and feeling better without using makeup,’ Tina said in a YouTube video on the subject.
So what are the eight things you need to know?

1. Drink more water
This might sound obvious, but Tina said an extra glass of water in your daily business can make a huge difference to your face and complexion.
‘Our skin is the largest organ in our bodies, and our bodies are made up of 60 per cent water, so you need to make sure you get that H20 in so it functions properly, and your skin and body will thank you for it,’ she said.
Tina (pictured) recommends you drink more water for glowing skin, and go to bed earlier as this will help your complexion to repair
2. Go to bed earlier
In the same vein as drinking more water, so too does sleep have a transformative effect on your appearance.
‘When we’re sleeping, our skin and body is working its hardest to repair and restore itself from the day’s damage, so you want to make sure you give it enough time to do its thing,’ she said.
If you’re someone who has trouble clocking eight hours, Tina recommends you invest in a silk eye mask – which blocks out the ambient light and also protects the skin around your eyes to reduce puffiness.
‘Switching to a silk pillowcase can also help your skin and hair,’ she added.
This is because silk absorbs less moisture than cotton, meaning your locks look less frizzy and your complexion looks smoother.
‘I couldn’t go back, now I’ve started sleeping on silk,’ she said.
3. Change your pillowcase
Tina said if you suffer from breakouts and acne quite regularly, you should change your pillowcase as regularly as you can manage.
‘Every two or three days is a good idea, as when we’re sleeping, all of that product we leave on our face gets transferred onto our pillows,’ she said.
Once it’s there, it builds up with oils and bacteria – which goes back into your skin.
If you’re clear-skinned, once a week is probably fine for your pillowcase – but the more you change it, the better you’ll look.
4. Get a dedicated morning and night skin routine and try the ‘three Ps’
A dedicated skincare regime in the morning and at night will hugely help you in your quest to look good without makeup.
But you need to use different products first and last thing.
‘During the day, you need to use products with ingredients that address the three Ps – preserve, protect and prevent,’ Tina said.
‘Look for ingredients that add hydration to preserve your skin, products with antioxidants and SPF to protect your skin and active ingredients like niacinimide and vitamin C for anti-ageing and prevention.’
At night, on the other hand, Tina said you need to apply active ingredients like AHAs and retinol, to help your skin work harder at replenishing and restoring itself.
‘Retinol is the holy grail ingredient for good skin,’ she said.
She also said you could get a brow and lash tint and lift in order to have fuller and darker eyelashes and eyebrows (pictured before and after)
5. Treat your brows and lashes
Good brows and lashes work wonders at making your face look more put together.
And if you’re someone who can never leave home without filling in your eyebrows or adding mascara, then Tina said you should definitely think about getting a brow and lash tint and a perm.
‘I love doing lash perms as I have straight lashes and when I do them, I look so much more awake,’ Tina said.
She added that when she treats her brows, they look far fuller naturally as a result.
Tina (pictured with makeup) said styling your hair with a blow dry or soft waves will always result in feeling and looking more polished
6. Style your hair
Just because you’re not wearing makeup, it doesn’t mean your hair needs to look a state.
‘Styling your hair on your makeup-free days will obviously make you look a lot better, and you don’t have to spend a lot of time and effort doing it,’ she said.
Maybe just give yourself a blow dry after you’ve washed your hair one day, or add some soft waves to your look.
You can also pop on a hair serum or essence to your ends to add nourishment.
If your lips look dry and flakey, a lip mask can help hugely with making them look better without makeup the next day (Tina’s products pictured)
7. Apply a lip mask
If your lips look dry and flakey, a lip mask can help hugely with making them look better without makeup the next day.
‘I have always struggled with dry lips, and so at night, I always exfoliate and buff them out a little bit – either by using a little scrub or my toothbrush to get rid of the dead skin cells,’ Tina said.
She also puts on a lip mask before she goes to sleep – either from Tatcha or Laniege.
‘You can also ensure your lips stay hydrated during the day with a lip balm,’ she added.
Tina also uses a Gua Shua tool, which helps with blood circulation and drainage, and she scrapes this across her face (pictured in action)
8. Use a jade roller and cut down on salt and wine
Finally, Tina said if you often wake up puffy and bloated, then it could be because you’re eating too much sodium at night or drinking too much wine.
‘Try and cut down on salt and wine, and apply an iced jade roller from the fridge to get rid of puffiness and inflammation first thing in the morning,’ she said.
Tina also uses a Gua Shua tool, which helps with blood circulation and drainage.
‘Scrape it across your skin and it will also help to tone your face,’ she said.
You could also wear jewellery or accessories to help to lift your face.
