Hector Bellerin has been waiting almost five months to get back at Troy Deeney for his comments after Watford’s shock victory in October, and he took his chance on Sunday.

With Arsenal holding a 2-0 lead at the Emirates, Deeney was handed the chance by referee Martin Atkinson to set up a nervous finale for Arsene Wenger’s men.

The referee awarded a penalty after Roberto Pereyra was brought down by Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Deeney, who scored from the spot in October’s 2-1 win over the Gunners, stepped up, and was denied by Petr Cech.

After stunning Arsenal in that ear-season encounter, the Hornets striker went on to make headlines slating Arsenal’s lack of ‘cajones’ and inferring Bellerin’s judgement on a potential Arsenal spot kick was restricted by his ‘long hair’.

‘He had his long hair in the way, he couldn’t see what he was doing,’ Deeney told BT Sport in his post-match interview.

But as is with most occasions where criticisms are made, a slice of humble pie is never far away. And after Deeney’s penalty miss at the Emirates on Sunday, Bellerin, who missed the win due to a knee injury, pounced on the opportunity.

‘Looks like you couldn’t see today either @T_Deeney,’ he wrote on Twitter.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan went on to add a third goal and final nail in the Watford coffin 15 minutes before full time to cap a successful week for Wenger’s Gunners.

The defeat itself does little to impact Watford’s season – other than de-rail an ambitious push for Europa League football – while Arsenal are still clawing onto the heels of Chelsea and Tottenham as they compete for that elusive fourth Champions League spot.
