Beloved Australian actress who appeared in Prisoner and Homicide dies aged 93

Beloved Australian actress Barbara ‘Babs’ Wheelton has died aged 93, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

The veteran actress was born in London in 1931 and later moved to Australia, where she appeared in several iconic TV shows in the 60s and 70s.

Wheelton’s family confirmed her passing on Monday in a heartbreaking obituary published in The Age.

‘It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Barbara (Babs) Wheelton on Sunday 18th August 2024,’ they began.

‘Dearly loved by her family, their spouses, partners and all extended family and dear friends.

‘In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Fight Parkinson’s Victoria.’

The energetic performer was known to viewers for playing three different characters in the legendary Aussie drama Prisoner.

She also appeared in the renowned Australian TV shows The Sullivans, Cop Shop and Homicide.

Throughout her celebrated career, Wheelton worked alongside many iconic Australian performers, including Charles ‘Bud’ Tingwell, Michael Caton and Noni Hazlehurst.

The English-born star also appeared in many radio dramas and was a published short story writer.

She ran her own website in which she openly discussed her career.

Wheelton is survived by her children Simon, Stephanie and Paul, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

Her funeral was held on Monday in Melbourne, followed by a private cremation.
