Fans have taken to social media to debate whether Ben White meant to cross the ball or not for Arsenal’s fifth goal against Chelsea on Tuesday evening. 

White scored in the 52nd minute of the Premier League fixture and the 70th minute, but it was his second goal that started the debate on X (formerly known as Twitter). 

White broke into the box on the right-hand-side of the pitch and received a lovely ball over the top from Arsenal captain, Martin Odegaard.

White looked as though he wanted to cross it first time but ended up roofing the ball into the far corner of the net. 

Fans are 50/50 on whether the Arsenal defender meant to score or whether it was ‘luck’ – with some claiming the surprise on White’s face ‘said it all’.

One fan wrote: ‘No chance he meant it but what a goal Ben White.’ Another added: ‘OMG White don’t think he even meant it’. 

While one wrote: ‘Ben White what a goal, he might’ve meant it to be a cross but we’ll take it’. Another added: ‘Ben White meant to cross but he’s just made it 5-0.’ 

Meanwhile, there were a select few fans who felt White did mean to score. One wrote: ‘Of course, Benjamin White meant it.’ Another added: ‘Yes Ben White meant it #ARSvsCFC’. 

A third fan wrote: ‘Ben White definitely meant it.’ While another Arsenal supporter said: ‘Ben White meant it…case closed’. 

White’s second goal of the game saw Arsenal close out a 5-0 victory over Mauricio Pochettino’s side at the Emirates on Tuesday evening. 

It was Leandro Trossard who scored the opening goal of the game in the fourth minute before White extended their lead after the break. 

Kai Havertz added another to Arsenal’s tally in the 57th minute, celebrating in front of the Chelsea fans before adding a second just eight minutes later. 

White rounded off a successful night for Mike Arteta’s side with a fifth team goal and his second of the night in the 70th minute.
