Bermuda wore shorts to freezing Olympics opening ceremony

The freezing temperature did not stop Team Bermuda from wearing their country’s namesake shorts at the 2018 Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Pyeongchang, South Korea and the internet has never been more impressed.

On February 9, as each country made their grand entrance into the Olympic stadium in 30-Fahrenheit weather, the British island territory members walked in bright red Bermuda shorts and blazers.

For the third straight year, cross-country skier, Tucker Murphy, 36, was Bermuda’s only athlete, and flag bearer, as he walked alongside his coach, Pepa Miloucheva and assistant coach, Waxer Jeff Shaw.

The three delegates strutted into the arena wearing the shorts that are named after the overseas territory, in a bold red hue, along with white button-down shirts covered with blazers, black knee-high socks and sneakers, and red scarves.

Despite 2,000 athletes across 92 countries being bundled up in cozy winter apparel, Bermuda stood their ground and rocked the shorts that evolved from their home and the internet is so impressed, people can’t stop talking about it.

ABC News reporter, Matt Gutman, 40, shared on Twitter, ‘So it’s about 20 degrees here in Pyeongchang and a windchill in single digits but the team from Bermuda is wearing… wait for it – Bermuda shorts. Give em a gold. #BermudaTough’

While two users just couldn’t believe their eyes as they watched the three delegates walk around in cutoff shorts, sharing, ‘Bermuda is in shorts. I repeat. In. Shorts,’ as one person even wrote, ‘Give them a medal already!’

Bermuda shorts are a casual style of bottoms that can be worn by both men or women and the shorts cut off just above the knees.

This isn’t the first time the island has worn the shorts for both a winter or summer Olympics and it is sometimes thought of as a tradition.

However, the fact that temperatures were below freezing, would have been a more than valid excuse for the representatives to just wear pants.

Instead, they chose to stand their ground and brave the frigid weather together, which people thought was the sweetest and bravest gesture ever.

‘Impressed with small Bermuda contingent wearing Bermuda shorts in 32 degree temperatures, very on brand,’ said one user.

‘Watching the Opening Ceremony and hands down loving Bermuda for walking out in Bermuda Shorts in the freezing weather for the Winter Olympics LEGENDS!,’ tweeted one excited viewer.

While many people were giving them kudos for wearing their outfits, a ton of people joked that they should just win a gold medal for donning the shorts.

‘Give all the awards to Team Bermuda for wearing bermuda shorts in the frigid cold,’ said one person, while another wrote, ‘he team from Bermuda coming out it -20 temps wearing Bermuda shorts have won these games already.’

An excited user shared, ‘Bermuda is hard core! Rockin shorts for the opening ceremony! Two degrees in Korea! I hope they win whatever sports they’re participating in.’

Bermuda wasn’t the only island to brave the cold, though. The Polynesian country Tonga, walked out to the ceremony bundled up, but their flag bearer, Pita Taufatofua, chose a different route.

Pita, for the second time at the Olympics, chose to lather himself in oil, and strut his bare-chest through the arena while wearing a grass skirt.

His first time shedding his shirt for his country was at the 2016 summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where the temperatures were a lot more suitable for such an occasion.
