Among them is the missionary position, which could offer a ‘slim anatomical advantage’, as the angle can mean that sperm has better access to the protective cervical mucus.
Elsewhere ‘doggy style’ and ‘reverse cowgirl’ are said to be advantageous, as they offer deeper penetration which potentially gives sperm better access to the opening of the cervix.
Sheryl A. Kingsberg, Ph.D, a professor of reproductive biology and psychiatry, from Ohio spoke to parents.com about the pros and cons of the top seven sex positions used to conceive.

Missionary
Dr Kingsberg says that this position could help two thirds of the population, whose uterus is tilted forward – but not the rest.
Addressing the theory that if the guy is on top his sperm has better access to the protective cervical mucus, she adds: ‘There’s no scientific data on that, though,’
‘Having women on their backs makes sense for women who have an anteverted uterus, one that is tilted forward, which is about two-thirds of the population’.
Reverse cowgirl
Having the woman on top and facing away from her partner means she controls the pace and the depth.
According to experts this can increase the ‘optimum effectiveness’.
Doggy style
According to experts this can be a good alternative for men who aren’t keen on missionary.
Mindy R. Schiffman, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist, told parents.com: ‘The missionary position is more demanding for men because they have to use their muscles to keep from putting their full weight on you, putting extra pressure on them.
Scissors
Experts say lying side-by-side and facing each other during intercourse can increase the ‘romantic’ aspect, relaxing both partners and allowing for ‘deeper entry’.
Rear entry
Much like the the scissors position, this position guarantees deeper penetration, potentially giving sperm an advantage.
The wheelbarrow
A more athletic alternative, pulling the woman’s legs up around the man’s thighs again means deeper penetration, with the angle meaning he has closer access to the cervix.
Favourite position
According to the experts, a woman’s enjoyment can sometimes increase the chances of conception.
‘There was some research that a woman’s orgasm did help move semen into the uterus terms of the contractions,’ Dr. Kingsberg told the site.
But admitting that there was little science behind the theory, she said the most fool-proof way to increase the chances, was by keeping up a consistent sex routine.
