Beverly Hills plastic surgery doctor facing murder charge

A Beverly Hills anesthesiologist has been charged murder after injecting an elderly patient with a sedative before an operation and then taking the drug himself during the procedure.

Stephen Kyosung Kim, 53, is accused of administering a lethal dose of the narcotic Demerol to a patient undergoing surgery at the Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery Center in Beverly Hills.

The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office says the accused allegedly had given the patient, Dr. Mark Greenspan, medicine to sedate him before surgery.

The doctor is expected to be arraigned at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in downtown Los Angeles,

While 71-year-old Greenspan was in a recovery room, Kim allegedly gave him a lethal dose of Demerol.

Prosecutors say soon after, Greenspan went into cardiac arrest and died and defendant is accused of injecting himself with drugs during the procedure.

Kim was arrested Wednesday by the Beverly Hills Police Department and taken to Los Angeles County jail, court records show, before being released after he posted a $1 million bail.

He is expected to be arraigned today at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in downtown Los Angeles.

Kim faces 25 years to life in a state prison if convicted.

In 2015 Dr. Hsiu-Ying ‘Lisa’ Tseng was convicted of second-degree murder in connection with the overdose of three of her patients in Los Angeles.
