Biden stumbles on the stairs of Air Force One again

President Joe Biden once again had trouble navigating Air Force One’s stairs – briefly stumbling as he boarded the presidential aircraft Saturday as he departed from Selma, Alabama.

The latest wobble comes less than two weeks after he tripped up the stairs as he boarded the plane after a whirlwind three-day visit to Europe, which included a 10-hour train ride to and from Kyiv, the wartorn capital of Ukraine.

The president, 80, also fell up the stairs of Air Force One just two months into his administration in March 2021.

In June, he fell off his bike while spending a weekend away in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

One of his biggest vulnerabilities going into the 2024 presidential campaign cycle – should Biden run – will be his age, with Republican candidate Nikki Haley already calling for politicians older than 75 to subject to ‘competency tests.’

On Saturday, former President Donald Trump, 76, who announced a presidential run in November, ridiculed Biden for his stumbles.

‘We all smile when he falls down stairs and things, it’s cute, when he falls off his bicycle,’ he joked with the crowd at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, of which Trump was the headliner.

‘You know what amazes me?’ the ex-president continued. ‘The reporters didn’t catch him when the bike was going down, they were standing right next to him. They let him fall,’ he said.

‘It’s amazing.’

Biden was biking with first lady Jill Biden around a trail near their Rehoboth Beach vacation home when members of a crowd that had gathered beckoned him over to wish him a happy father’s day.

The president stopped his bike but then fell to the side when his right foot got stuck in the toe clip. Reporters did attempt to catch the president, but he was quickly swarmed by Secret Service agents.

He got up after just a few seconds on the ground.

Biden’s falls follow in the footsteps of several modern presidents.

Presidents Barack Obama and Gerald Ford each had trouble with the presidential plane’s stairs, while Trump boarded the aircraft with toilet paper stuck to his shoe.

The most memorable example came on June 1, 1975 when Republican President Gerald Ford fell down Air Force One’s slippery stairs as he arrived in Salzburg, Austria.

Former Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer recalled another incident, this one from the campaign trail in 1976.

He recalled reporting that Ford stumbled, missed the door and then bumped his head as he tried to depart the rear platform of a train in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

There were also several stories about Ford falling while skiing.

Decades before, Ford nearly fell overboard when serving as a navigation officer during World War II on the USS Monterey.

A wave had crashed up on the ship’s deck. Ford was saved because his foot got caught in a grate, the story goes.

That moment was memoralized in a statue of Ford that’s on display on the USS Ford, when the ship isn’t deployed, according to Insider.

If you look closely, you can see that one of the statue’s feet is stuck in a grate.

Ford’s clumsiness became part of his pop culture persona too, with Saturday Night Live cast member Chevy Chase using it in his presidential bits of the time.

When elected in 2008, President Barack Obama ranked among the nation’s youngest presidents.

He notably turned the White House tennis court into where he’d play basketball games with staffers.

Still, Air Force One’s steps became a challenge for the Democratic leader.

He stumbled on the stairs on March 30, 2015 upon returning from a golf trip in Florida;

Trump didn’t have any notable falls, but that didn’t keep attention away from his toes.

There were at least two instances when it appeared he got toilet paper stuck to his shoe.

In October 2018, he boarded Air Force One to Minneapolis and a white sheet appears glued to his left shoe.

And then in November 2019 as he departed New York, it looks like some toilet paper got stuck again.

Additionally, Trump got ridiculed for the way he walked down a ramp at West Point in June 2020.

He later said that his odd walk was thanks to the ramp being ‘slippery’ – despite it being a sunny day – and because he was wearing ‘leather bottom shoes,’ which are also ‘slippery,’ he said.
