Australia’s landmark Big Prawn in New South Wales has been blurred out by Google facial recognition technology.

The famous Ballina prawn appears in-tact but hiding its distinctive facial features on the Google Street View application.  

Social media users reacted with amusement to the strange discovery made by Reddit.

‘Surely cows and the Big Prawn have as much right to privacy as anyone else?’ one user commented. 

Another user said: ‘Giggle … the identity of the Prawn must be protected.’  

Google’s facial detection technology is designed to blur the faces of people in street view to protect their privacy. 

The computer tries to detect then blur the faces of people on the street when Google’s street view car drives past.

The Big Prawn found near Bunnings was built in 1989 and upgraded in 2013 to include a tail.

Australia’s other famous icons including the  Big Orange, Big Banana, Big Potato and Big Crocodile appear to be clearer on Google Maps.
