It’s the most prestigious film event in the world, attracting countless industry VIPs, each hoping their project will receive the longest-standing ovation.

However, before previewing upcoming films at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, attendees attempted to win the title of best dressed on the red carpet by dripping in glamorous and often extravagant designer garments.

Unfortunately for an unlucky few, the hours spent planning outfits become overshadowed by embarrassing outfit mishaps.

Among the A-listers whose time on the red carpet was associated with awkward encounters was Jennifer Lawrence.

Dressed in a dramatic floor-sweeping gown, the actress, 33, arrived with her Die My Love co-star Robert Pattinson, who looked every inch the leading man in a sharp black tux.

But their grand entrance hit a snag when Robert accidentally trod on the train of Jennifer’s voluminous dress, briefly stopping her in her tracks.

Ever the pro, Jen turned with a gasp before the pair burst into laughter. The media-trained stars quickly regained composure, smiling as they continued down the red carpet together.

Elsewhere, a snag became a major incident for Indian actress and model Urvashi Rautela, with eagle-eyed fans spotting a tear in her extravagant black gown.

Urvarshi, arriving on the carpet for L’Agent Secret, put on a dramatic display in a black, gathered gown.

However, attention deterred from the dress’s elegant train because of a rip in the seam where the mesh sleeve connected to the rest of her dress.

Thankfully, photographers managed to capture the 31-year-old from angles where the stitching error wasn’t so visible.

Meanwhile, though Nicole Kidman didn’t suffer any fashion mishaps per say, her hairstyle attracted attention for all the wrong reasons.

The 57-year-old actress has long worn wigs for her roles, but on Sunday, she suffered a hairpiece failure at the 2025 Kering Women in Motion Awards and Cannes Film Festival Presidential Dinner.

The Moulin Rouge! star wore a weave to add volume to her strawberry blonde locks, but the mesh wig cap was visible as Nicole posed for photos on the red carpet.

Nevertheless, Nicole, who accepted the 2025 Kering Women in Motion Award, showed off her striking red dress as she posed for the cameras at the exclusive event.

Established a decade ago, the honour recognises women who have made a groundbreaking impact on the big screen.

After accepting the honour, Nicole said she would continue to use her platform to fight for continued gender equality in the film industry.

She said, ‘I’m just an advocate and want to continue to keep moving forward with that.’

Elsewhere, the event’s new nudity rules rendered otherwise stunning outfits potentially unacceptable.

Over recent years, the star-studded extravaganza has arguably won more attention for the outfits worn by its celebrity guests than the roster of feature films screened on the Croisette.

But new nudity rules, devised for ‘the sake of decency,’ was implemented when French director Amélie Bonnin’s Leave One Day opened the ceremony.

According to organisers, the austere move is an attempt to stifle the celebrity trend for ‘naked dresses’ – namely provocative outfits that reveal more than they conceal – on the red carpet.

‘For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as any other area of the festival,’ stated a Cannes festival document.

‘The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.’

Halle Berry (seen at the The Phoenician Scheme red carpet on Sunday) admitted that she was forced to scrap her outfit plans following the new dress guidelines

The surprise new policy featured in a recent festival-goers charter, released with a series of outlines regarding expected public behaviour.

It’s understood that the event now adopts a more conservative dress code, with suits, dinner jackets and floor-length evening gowns favoured over headline grabbing ensembles.

The change forced some attendees to make a last-minute U-turn on their outfit choices, including Halle Berry.

Speaking at the festival’s first press conference, Halle said: ‘I had an amazing dress by Gupta to wear tonight, and I cannot wear it because the train is too big.

‘Of course, I’m going to follow the rules, so I had to make a pivot. But the nudity part, I do think, is also a good move.’

It’s up for interpretation which stars pushed the updated boundaries with their outfit choices, but Heidi Klum’s ensemble for the at the Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning screening is up for debate.

The model, 51, donned a jaw dropping gown from Elie Saab’s 1001 Seasons Haute Couture Collection.

The striking number was a bold choice following the new guidelines due to the plunging neckline showing off a busty display, the off-the-shoulder detailing, and sheer panels.
