New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has named who he believes the all-time greatest player in each of the game’s three phases are, while talking to former NFL executive turned analyst Mike Tannenbaum.

Along with Belichick highlighting why he choose those players, he also revealed that each one played under him during his career.

On offense Belichick predictably named quarterback Tom Brady, who led the coach to all six of his Super Bowl victories.

Defensively Belichick named outside linebacker Lawernce Taylor and on special teams he picked gunner and reserve wide receiver Matthew Slater.

‘I feel like I’ve coached the best offensive player, the best player in football in Tom (Brady); the best defensive player in football in L.T. (Lawrence Taylor), and the best special-teams player in football in Matt Slater,’ Belichick told Tannenbaum.

‘If you’re a coach and you coach Taylor, Brady and Slater, that’s three pretty good players.’

Brady and Taylor need no introduction as they are both two of the most storied players in the game’s history, although it should be noted that Taylor is the one of the three players who did not play in New England for Belichick.

The Hall of Fame linebacker overlapped with Belichick when the now 71-year-old coach was an assistant with the New York Giants.

Slater is the lone player who may not be as well known by the common fans, but was one of the most important special teams players on three of New England’s Super Bowl teams.

‘As a core special-teams player, Slater really is, you know … has been the best of all time,’ Belichick said. ‘I hope he gets recognized for that.’

Slater is also the only one of the three players who is still suiting up in the league and is preparing for his 16th season.
