Bill Hader reveals why his series Barry is so successful – and the one on-set rule he sticks by when hiring actors and crew members

Bill Hader has revealed the secret behind the success of his award-winning dark comedy series Barry.

The hit HBO show, created by Hader and Alec Berg, follows a hitman named Barry Berkman (played by Hader) who travels from his home in Cleveland to Los Angeles to kill someone.

In a twist, Berkman finds himself joining an acing class and begins to have a change of heart about his career choices.

Speaking to News Corp on Sunday, Hader, 44, noted that channelling his own life into the characters helped elevate the series’ success.

‘When the show started out, and I started to do this [script writing] for the first time I think one of the faults in my writing was being based more on movies and books. And so it was much more heavily inspired and not really from life,’ he said.

However, things changed when Hader decided to visualise the characters as real-life people.

‘[I said], “Okay, let’s put more of ourselves in and ask questions”,’ he added.

The former Saturday Night Live star also spoke about his approach to running the production, describing himself as a ‘pretty fair boss’.

‘I run a pretty nice set. I can be very exacting … which I know can be annoying. But I think overall, I think I’m a pretty good person,’ he said.
