Billionaire Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg makes low-key outing in New York

For many, the weekend is a time for rest and recuperation, but it looks like billionaire Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg may have had a rather tiring few days, if her somewhat worse for wear appearance on Sunday is anything to go by.

The 50-year-old tech executive was pictured in New York City over the weekend – one day before the UN General Assembly kicked off – wearing a very casual ensemble and seemingly without a stitch of makeup on her face.

Clearly keen to stay comfy and casual during her trip to the Big Apple, Sandberg opted to wear a baggy blue cheesecloth blouse that featured a mullet-style hemline, and which completely concealed her figure.

Low-key weekend: Billionaire Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg was pictured in New York City on Sunday wearing a very low-key, casual outfit

She paired the shapeless shirt with a pair of comfortable navy pants and a pair of white sneakers, forgoing a purse in favor of holding a stack of papers and a laptop in her arms, which were folded tightly across her chest.

It appears as though Sandberg was arriving at the hotel, suggesting she may well be in New York for a business trip; her arrival actually coincided with the start of the UN General Assembly, which has several events in its line-up, as well as a number of summits and panels that will run alongside it.

Her boyfriend, marketing CEO Tom Bernthal, is also based in New York so it may be that Sandberg traveled to the East Coast to visit him.

Whatever the reason for her trip, the Facebook exec looked to be in good spirits, despite her rather tired appearance, and she was seen chatting animatedly with some men outside the building, all while keeping her arms firmly crossed over her chest and stomach.

Her outing comes just a few months after it was revealed that Sandberg has a new beau, whom she was introduced to by the brother of her late husband Dave Goldberg.

In July, it was reported that Sandberg and Bernthal, who is the co-founder and CEO of consumer insights and strategy consultancy Kelton Global, had been dating for a ‘few months’.

The couple made their first public appearance at a country music concert in Boise, Idaho, where they enjoyed the musical stylings of chart-topper Garth Brooks.

Bernthal, a divorced father of three, is a keen fan of the country scene and is said to have introduced Sandberg to the genre.

It was also revealed at the time that the pair had been introduced by Rob Goldberg, the brother of Sandberg’s late husband, who passed away in suddenly in 2015 after he suffered a heart attack while on vacation in Mexico to celebrate a friend’s birthday.

Rob Goldberg is also Bernthal’s best friend and he thought that he and Sandberg would be a good match because of their shared values and dedication to their children.

A source close to the couple shared that, although they are based in different U.S. cities, they are keen to see each other regularly and are making their relationship work by ‘travelling a lot’.

The source added: ‘Tom is Rob’s best friend, and it is really special that Dave’s brother was the one to connect them.

‘He’s this really nice, down to earth guy. They’re both devoted parents. It’s a nice thing that it has worked out so well.’

Sandberg had two children with her late husband, while Bernthal is a father-of-three.

In Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy, Sandberg reveals how she found her husband on the floor while they were on a vacation together.

She said: ‘We found Dave on the floor, lying by the elliptical machine, his face slightly blue and turned to the left, a small pool of blood under his head.

‘We all screamed. I started CPR. Rob took over from me. A doctor came and took over from him.’

In her book Sandberg, who had been married for 11 years, explains how the couple’s two children collapsed from grief at their father’s funeral.

She recounts how she had to tell them their father died and how at Mr Goldberg’s funeral they ‘got out of the car and fell to the ground, unable to take another step’.

She writes: ‘I lay on the grass, holding them as they wailed.’

Before meeting Bernthal, she dated Activation Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, 56, for three years.

A source close to Sandberg and Kotick said they broke up as they are ‘very different people’.

However, they ‘remain great friends’, according to the source.

After Mr Goldberg’s death Bernthal shared a tribute to him on Facebook saying he was ‘Truly one of the kindest, most generous, talented, and enjoyable guys ever.’

Bernthal has won an Emmy Award as a producer for NBC News and worked in the Clinton White House before founding consumer insights and strategy consulting firm Kelton Global.

His website explains how he is originally from Washington DC, but settled in Los Angeles in 2000 and has lived near Venice Beach since 2007.
