Bird lover spends £60 sending injured pigeon to sanctuary

Bosses at a Warwickshire wildlife sanctuary have seen plenty of examples of Britain’s famous love of animals.

But even they were surprised when an injured pigeon turned up at their help centre in its own taxi.

The lucky bird had been found by a kind-hearted woman in Aston, around 25 miles away, and she was so concerned for its welfare she spent £60 on the cab ride to get the creature to safety.

As well as paying for taxi so the bird could travel directly to the Nuneaton and Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary, the woman also made a donation to the centre to make sure it was nursed back to good health.

Sanctuary owner Geoff Grewcock said: ‘It was incredible. It goes to show what loving, caring people there are out there.

‘The woman had sent the pigeon in the back of a taxi, on its own, from Aston to us here, and even sent a donation for us as well, I could not believe it.’

The taxi raid came about after the woman took the injured bird to a vets near to where she found it, but was told it would have to be put down.

Mr Crewcock added; ‘They said that they would have to put it down but she said “No, you are not”.

‘That’s when she phoned us here. She told us that she would be sending it in a taxi, and she did. It was marvellous, it just goes to show the lengths that some people will go to care for animals, it is incredibly kind.’

Mr Crewcock admitted it was a very strange experience waiting for a taxi to arrive with a bird in the back, but is happy the creature is now on the road to recovery.
