Birmingham students hold secret rave in Greggs

A group of students had their pastry dreams come true after holding a secret rave in a Greggs bakery.

The high street shop was transformed into a nightclub in just three hours and over 50 students were treated to free sausage rolls, doughnuts, and alcohol and a DJ set.

The secret rave came after a request from University of Birmingham student, Nikki Gardner, who commented on the company’s Facebook page, asking if they could throw a ‘welcome back to uni’ party for her and her friends at a local Greggs.

The high street retailer took the plunge and made their dreams in doughnuts.

Nikki, 21, said: ‘I came back to university and wanted to celebrate.

‘Me and my mates love Greggs so I just thought I’d ask.

‘I never actually thought they’d reply, let alone actually throw the party.’

A three-hour transformation saw the shop, at Birmingham’s 41 High Street, kitted out with a sound system and club lighting, as well as inflatable doughnuts and pizza slices and confetti canons.

Nikki, an International Relations Student, was also granted a VIP guest list for her friends to gain entry to the ‘one night only’ pop-up club.

Clubbers arrived in fancy dress and partied to sets from a local DJ as well as The University’s DJ society, Mix Soc.

The event went viral with the hashtag #ministryofgreggs.

Nikki said: ‘It was so much fun I couldn’t believe they’d actually decked it out with lights and confetti cannons.

‘I mean I was hoping for a few free pastries but they went to so much effort it was awesome.

‘I got to invite all of my mates so they were just happy to be there.

‘Most of them thought it was a joke when I told them but I think it finally sunk in.

‘When they turned up at Greggs and there was security outside.

‘I would love to do it again, I graduate at the end of this year so maybe a graduation party?’
