Bizarre Adelaide rental shows a glass-walled bathroom in the KITCHEN – so how much would you pay?

Bizarre rental takes ‘open plan living’ to new heights as its glass-walled bathroom sits in the middle of the KITCHEN – so how much would you pay?

  • A former Airbnb studio glass bathroom design has caused an online fuss
  • Some have made fun of the confusing toilet area next to the small kitchen
  • But real estate agents said the glass is tempered and has a frosted design
  • The 35 sqm Adelaide studio apartment costs prospective tenants $400/week

A studio apartment with a glass bathroom inside a ‘modern’ kitchen raised eyebrows after it was put up for rent for $400 a week.

The South Australian property, with its partly frosted-glass bathroom next to the fireplace, is one of seven apartments on the O’Connell street block in North Adelaide.

The 35sqm studio was advertised as having a ‘great-sized modern bathroom’ as landlords tried to attract tenants willing to part with $400-a-week.

Despite online skepticism, the estate agents handling the property simply said ‘it is what it is’, and pointed out that it wasn’t illegal.

Prospective renters were baffled by the bathroom design, which is behind a frosted wall next to a fireplace

Images of the glass bathroom led some online commenters to mock the set up with one saying it looked like a ‘Swedish prison’, while another joked it resembled ‘your first custom house in The Sims’.

Ray White’s media manager Alex Tilbury told Daily Mail Australia the bathroom in the  former Airbnb studio is approved by council.

‘It is tempered glass, obviously it’s frosted, and its fully insured – there is nothing illegal about it’, Ms Tilbury said.

‘I don’t know why they are getting so excited, it is what it is.’

The fully furnished studio is the smallest in the block and is one of two featuring a glass bathroom.

The air-conditioned property has an outside terrace, is not far from amenities and has internet and utilities as part of the rent price.

Ms Tilbury said there were three applications under review and she expects the highly sought after apartment to be tenanted by the end of the week.

The realestate agent declined offers made to it that were higher than the advertised price.

Ray White North Adelaide principal Rachel Lawrie told Daily Mail Australia the seven apartments were all former Airbnbs that lost business during Covid and were converted to operate as fixed term tenancies.

‘[The apartments are] for people looking for shorter-term stays, like students – it’s bigger than student accommodation, it’s probably a lot more luxurious as well,’ Ms Lawrie said.

She said she didn’t understand the fuss about the bathroom and added they had a business couple staying there who were fine with the arrangements.

‘The bathroom is like a room in of itself – It’s just a studio and it’s made like an Airbnb for one person basically – it’s not necessarily you are having a family in there, so it’s your own privacy regardless.’
