Blackburn Rovers striker Ben Brereton Diaz has agreed to join LaLiga side Villarreal in the summer on a free transfer.

Brereton Diaz is out of contract at Ewood Park at the end of the season, and is now free to talk to clubs in Europe about a pre-contract agreement.

The 23-year-old has opted to join Villarreal, and will move to Spain once his Blackburn contract expires in June.

Diaz arrived at Blackburn from Nottingham Forest on an initial loan deal in August 2018 before making the move permanent the following January.

He netted just a single Championship goal in each of his first two seasons at the club, but showed his true potential in the 2021-22 season, scoring 22 league goals under Tony Mowbray.

His eye-catching form led to him receiving an international call-up for Chile, and he now has 17 caps to his name, scoring four times.

As he headed into the final year of his contract, Brereton Diaz was linked with a move away from Blackburn last summer, with Fulham, Celta Vigo and Nice all tracking the forward.

He ended up staying put, and has picked up where he left off last term, scoring 10 goals in all competitions so far this season.

Brereton Diaz is now set to leave Blackburn in the coming months, but could depart on a high, with Jon Dahl Tomasson’s men currently in the hunt for promotion.

Blackburn sit fourth in the table, and will be hoping to secure a play-off place as they aim to return to the Premier League for the first time in 11 years.
