The seasoned interiors expert described his house as ‘coastal’, likening it to being in the tropical surrounds of Byron Bay.

While Darren favours the laid-back coastal vibes, he insisted he pairs it with luxe accents and bold features.

Showing off his lounge room first, Darren had styled his bookshelf with a mixture of decorative pieces, vases, plants and candles.

He believed the combination was ‘the basic building blocks of any great console, coffee table, or book shelf’ and was seen as a recurring theme throughout the house.

The lounge had two grey couches, with blue cushions working in contrast with the natural greenery.

The dining room also opens up to a private courtyard surrounded by more greenery.

‘It feels like you are in a tropical paradise,’ Darren said of the space.

When asked how to bring an outdoor space to life, he suggested: ‘You need some pattern and texture and you need some colour.’

A particular design challenge Darren encountered was a room he claimed was a ‘dead space’ when he and husband Olivier Duvillard moved in.

‘It didn’t have a function, but by putting in a big artwork, feature pendants and decorating it so it looks like it has a purpose, a couple of chairs, a bit of decor here and amazingly, these cushions were not designed around that painting,’ he pointed out the transition into a functional and stylish space. That was a lucky incident.

According to Domain, the interior designer and his husband Olivier purchased the Bondi property in 2015 for $2.8 million.

The five-bedroom, four-bathroom house is also home to their four dogs, Brutus, Razzy, Rule and Pips.

Unlike The Block, an example of the property before its transformation is not available.
