BMW driver runs red light and smashes into van and takeaway

Shocking video shows a BMW hit a van and then smash into a chicken shop – before the passengers run off leaving a man crawling on the ground in agony.

The BMW jumped a red light at high speed and collided with the white van before flying out of control into Rio’s Peri Peri in Coventry.

Three men emerge from the wreckage of the car and flee, totally ignoring the van driver, a man in his 30s, who is clearly shocked and in pain.

The BMW jumped a red light at high speed and collided with the white van during the incident in Coventry

Amazingly, the van driver escaped yesterday’s incident with what police described as ‘minor injuries’.

The video shows the bright lights of the van and the BMW approaching the junction, seemingly unaware of each other’s presence.

The van appeared to have right of way as a green traffic light can be seen signalling go, while a red can be seen pointing at the BMW.

The two vehicles collided in a devastating slam which crushes the front of the van and directs the BMW towards the takeaway.

The BMW hits the shop at speed and the van spins in the middle of the road leaving a trail of debris.

The van driver then falls out of his vehicle crawling on the ground just as a man gets out of the BMW.

He continues to crawl towards the men in the BMW appearing to be in agony.

All three men in the BMW assess the situation before fleeing, sprinting as fast as they can.

Tracy Gibson-Whent was one of the first to arrive and try to help the van driver. In a Facebook comment she described what happened immediately after.

She said: ‘I did go over and stayed with the van driver until he was on the ambulance, I needed to get him help first so that’s why I was looking for the name of the junction for the emergency services to know where to come.

‘I was talking to him all the time I was on the phone as they were asking me if he was breathing, name etc., it’s easy to watch and think in such a small frame of time that nothing was being done but it was as I know I needed to call for help first.’

A witness told local media the men in the BMW fled.

She said: ‘We were at the lights heading towards the city centre at the Station Street junction.

‘Our lights turned green and we were carrying on as normal and you just saw this car come out of the side street straight in to the van, which turned it around, and the car then crashed in to the takeaway. They fled the scene.’

West Midlands Police said: ‘Officers were called just after 6am after a car went into the back of another car and then into a shop.

‘One driver, a man, is being treated for minor injuries and inquiries continue to trace the driver of the other vehicle.’

When asked about the men who fled, police said they are ‘still to be identified.’

The takeaway owner told the Birmingham Mail he was ‘shocked’ after he received a phone call from his friend to say his shop had been part of car crash.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said: ‘One ambulance was sent to the scene and upon arrival found the driver of the van – a man in his 30s – who was assessed and taken to University Hospital in Coventry.

‘The three men that run off leaving the van driver on the floor we need Justice if anyone recognise these low-lives please do the right thing.’
