Body of hillwalker found in Scottish Highlands

  • They planned to hike in the Achnashellach area with black Pointer dog Archie

The body of a hillwalker has been found in the Scottish Highlands – but the search for his missing brother continues.

Police formally identified Alan Gibson, 56, who had been reported missing along with his brother Neil, 63.

The pair had set off on a walk at around 7.45am that morning from Strathcarron, Wester Ross, and planned to hike in the Achnashellach area.

They took a black Pointer dog called Archie with them.  

The recovery follows a day of extensive searching by Torridon and Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Teams, Coastguard Rescue Helicopter and the Search and Rescue Dog Association. 

A Police Scotland spokesman said: ‘Mountain rescue teams searching in the area of Achnashellach for two missing hillwalkers have sadly recovered the body of a man.

‘He has been formally identified as Alan Gibson who was reported missing with his brother after failing to return from a walk in the area on Thursday.’

Mr Gibson’s family has been informed while the search for his brother is ongoing and will continue into Sunday.
