The body of a woman in her 30s has been found on a soccer pitch in the middle of a popular park.

Police are treating the death as suspicious, and homicide detectives are combing the park in the inner Melbourne suburb of Carlton North.

The area was still locked down early on Wednesday morning, with police turning joggers away from the park.

Victoria Police said the body was discovered shortly before 3am by a passerby, and paramedics were unable to revive the woman. 

The body was found on a soccer pitch located between Royal Parade and Princes Park Drive.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be established and the investigation is ongoing.
