Body recovered from NSW central west dam

The body of a man who disappeared while attempting to rescue a child from a dam in the central west region of NSW has been recovered.

The 38-year-old man had gone to the aid of a struggling nine-year-old boy in the Wyangala dam, near Cowra, but sank below the surface at 6pm on Friday, NSW police said.

The child was rescued by a kayaker but the man did not resurface.

Police and the State Emergency Service began searching water and shoreline but postponed the operation on Friday night.

The search began again on Saturday morning and the man’s body was discovered around 1pm.

He has not been formally identified.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
