Bomb scare in Melbourne as ‘suspicious items’ found in car

  • A stolen Toyota Echo containing ‘suspicious items’ found in Melbourne’s east
  • The Bomb Response Unit was called after police searched car with false plates 
  • Two people fled the car, a woman was arrested nearby and a man is on the run
  • The Mountain Highway in Bayswater was closed, drivers urged to avoid the area

The bomb squad has been called to in to investigate ‘suspicious items’ found in a stolen car.

A Toyota Echo with false licence plates was seen by police parked on the Mountain Highway in Bayswater, in Melbourne’s east, early on Thursday.

A man and a woman had fled when police returned to investigate, and the Bomb Response Unit was called soon afterwards.

The woman was arrested after being caught nearby, but the man remains on the run, The Age reported. 

Mountain Highway is closed between the High Street and Scoresby Road intersections, and drivers are asked to avoid the area.
