Bomb squad called to suspicious package just five miles from White House

Police are investigating a suspicious package just five miles outside of the Capitol in Washington, DC.

The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed to DailyMail.com that members of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal were called to investigate the item on the 5000 block of Hayes St. NE at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday.

That portion of the road has been closed off while crews from the bomb squad investigate the package. 

Police are putting up extra security around the U.S Capitol building ahead of Monday’s certification of the 2024 Presidential Election in congress.

On January 6, 2021, a mob of rioters stormed the building in an effort to stop the process of affirming the 2020 presidential election results.
