An Australian university has been accused of gender discrimination for implementing an alcohol ban that applies only to male students.
The booze ban affects five male-only corridors in student housing at Bond University in Queensland.
The university says it imposed the ban due to frequent wild parties which required ‘excessive cleaning’ of the accommodation.
However, male students have complained that female students are just as involved in the parties but have not faced any consequences.
‘They have made five boy corridors completely dry, which means we can’t drink alcohol in our corridor, which has never been previously an issue,’ a student group told the Gold Coast Bulletin.
‘They also fined all the residents in those corridors $75 each for what they call excessive cleaning, even though nothing was cleaned.’
‘Every single morning after a party I came out and cleaned up everything,’ one student claimed.

‘There’s been female corridors that do the exact same thing but they didn’t get fined or banned from drinking.’
Students also allege that the university administration has confiscated unopened bottles of alcohol.
‘Our corridor is still a mess, the bathrooms haven’t been cleaned in weeks, there’s still vomit on the ground, it’s pretty disgusting,’ a student said.
A Bond University spokesperson rejected claims of gender discrimination.

‘The university expects all students to behave responsibly and treat their fellow students and the property with respect,’ the spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.
‘The temporary ban on alcohol in about 6 per cent of communal campus accommodation is the direct result of disruptive and anti-social behaviour that has negatively impacted other students.’
The Bond University spokesperson said the ban only applied to the corridors, and all students ‘are free to consume alcohol in one of the university’s licensed premises, in their own rooms or off campus’.
‘The university will take further action if the behaviour of a small minority does not improve.’
