- U2’s Bono has been ridiculed for a poem about the Russian war in Ukraine
- His St Patrick’s Day poem has been dubbed ‘the worst poem ever written’
- Nancy Pelosi read the poem out at a lunch for lawmakers at the White House
U2’s Bono has been ridiculed online for writing an ‘unhinged’ poem about Ukraine after it was read out by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on St Patrick’s Day.
The 61-year-old rock superstar’s poem was unveiled by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at the White House’s annual ‘Friends of Ireland’ luncheon yesterday.
Bewildered guests were treated to such lines as: ‘They struggle for us to be free/ From the psycho in our human family/ Ireland’s sorrow and pain/ Is now the Ukraine/ And saint Patrick’s name now Zelenskyy.’
After finishing her reading of Bono’s musings on Putin’s bloodthirsty invasion of Ukraine, the room erupted with laughter – before Pelosi moved awkwardly on to introducing a Riverdance performance.
The poem was quickly ridiculed online with one Twitter commenter saying: ‘Insane to look at the net worth of Bono and Pelosi and know that this is as much as they’re willing to do to help, AND they think it means anything?’

Pelosi said that Bono, who is from Dublin, had been ‘a very Irish part of our lives’.
She said revealed Bono had sent her the poem that morning as she shared it with lawmakers on March 17.
It has since been torn apart on social media, with one user calling it ‘the worst poem ever written’.
Another social media user said the line ‘the psycho in this human family’ was ‘absolutely the most unhinged’.
‘Is he saying we are all one big family and Putin is no longer invited to dinner?’ she asked.

Others called for Bono for to face sanctions and wrote their own parody versions of his poem.
One joked Bono had written a poem that read: ‘The war is so sad/ It’s making me mad/ But I hope that Vlad/ Gets killed really bad.’
Meanwhile, Fox News’s Tucker Carlson said Pelosi ‘may have unveiled the most powerful weapon in her armament’ by revealing the poem.
Social media users slammed Bono’s poem, with one calling it ‘the worst poem ever written’
He added that she read the poem as if she ‘had just ended the war’.
‘You and Bono. Thanks Nancy,’ he said.
Bono shared his poem online as he claimed the panned verse ‘wasn’t written to be published’ but maintained ‘the limerick is irregular and not funny at all’.
‘We stand with the people of Ukraine and their leader,’ he added.
Bono’s attempt at a heartfelt poem about alleged war criminal Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine came less than a week after Poet Laureate Simon Armitage published his take on the war.
Armitage’s poem Resistance was met with a much better reception than Bono’s poem and referenced the moment a brave Ukrainian woman told a Russian soldier to ‘put sunflower seeds in your pockets so that they will grow on Ukrainian land after you die.’
