Problems: Boohoo looks set to close its controversial Leicester factory

Boohoo looks set to close its controversial Leicester factory just two years after it was opened.

The online fashion group said less than 100 staff at the Thurmaston Lane site would be impacted by the closure and it expects that ‘some roles will be relocated’.

Two months ago, a BBC investigation alleged Boohoo had broken promises to make its clothes fairly and was pressuring suppliers to drive prices down.

The clothing retailer said the plans to shut the site were not related to the findings of BBC’s Panorama investigation.

A spokesman for Boohoo said: ‘As in any retail business, the role of our sites continues to evolve over time and following significant investments at our Sheffield distribution centre, and the opening of a new distribution centre in the US, we must now take steps to continue to ensure we are a more efficient, productive and strengthened business.’

Boohoo said in November at the time of the Panorama investigation that it ‘has not shied away from dealing with the problems of the past’.
