Travel experts at FlightsFinder.com have revealed seven ways to save money on flights, including the exact day and time to book flights.

The demand for travel since the Covid pandemic has led to a steep rise in airline ticket prices around the world.

Air fares rose by 20 per cent between April and May 2023 alone, with some of the highest rises for European flights.

Major UK airlines have already warned of more steep hikes in air fares, amidst rising fuel prices and post-pandemic recovery.

Luckily, following tips while online shopping for flights can significantly lower prices, such as browsing in incognito mode and booking at midnight.

FlightsFinder founder Shahab Siddiqui said: ‘Even so-called budget airlines are increasing prices, and combined with the cost of additional add-ons like luggage, booking a holiday can be excruciatingly expensive.’

Here are FlightFinder’s seven tips to save money on aeroplane travel.

1. Go incognito

If shoppers are regularly tracking certain tickets, airlines can increase prices as they know there is a demand.

So, while it doesn’t always make a difference, searching in incognito or private mode on your web browser may drive prices down on flights due to algorithms and cookie systems.

2. Use a VPN

This one is for the tech-savvy only, but downloading a VPN will unlock lower airline prices.

VPNs, or virtual private networks, is software that works by funnelling web information through secure digital tunnels.

Some VPNs hide where you are in the world. That helps when booking flights, as companies use location data, as well as other browsing habits, to alter on-screen prices.

This means those searching from a wealthier country will get higher prices.

3. Compare airline prices

It’s not always just the budget airlines which provide the best prices, so search around to find which deals work best for you.

It may also be worth considering a connecting flight, which could knock hundreds off the overall travel price.

4. Discount codes

Checking for discount codes online is a quick and easy way to bring down costs.

Check airline social media sites, dedicated coupon websites and travel forums. Students, NHS staff and the military may also be able to get unique perks.

5. Book mid-week

Tuesday and Wednesday nights are the best times to book the cheapest flights, with midnight recommended as the right time to secure a top bargain.

6. Check last-minute choices

Sometimes flight providers bring down costs to fill empty seats or cancellations.

This is unlikely to be the case during peak travel and holiday seasons, so it is best to book in advance for popular destinations.
