A bunch of bologna! Border agents in El Paso bust driver with 154 POUNDS of illegal Mexican lunch meat

  • CBP field officers seized seized 14 rolls of Mexican bologna on Thursday in Texas
  • Driver tried to hide the forbidden meat and falsely claimed it was turkey ham
  • Foreign bologna is banned to protect the US pork supply from diseases

A group of sharp-eyed Customs and Border Protection officers were hardly out to lunch when they seized 154 pounds of illegal Mexican bologna on Thursday.

Travelers are banned from bringing nearly all pork products, including bologna, into the U.S. in order to protect the domestic pork supply from foreign diseases.

The meat seizure was made shortly after 9am at the Bridge of the Americas international crossing in El Paso, after a Chevrolet pickup with a Texas license plate entered the port from Mexico.

During inspection, a CBP officer spotted some suspicious red rolls behind the rear seat of the truck and began grilling the driver.

Trying to throw the agents off the scent, the driver made the bogus claim that he was merely transporting turkey ham.

A secondary inspection revealed 14 rolls of illicit Mexican bologna, which was promptly seized.

The bologna was destroyed. The driver was released.

‘It is important that travelers understand they should declare all items they are transporting from abroad to avoid fines and penalties,’ said CBP El Paso Port Director Beverly Good in a statement.

‘A properly declared prohibited item can be abandoned at the port without consequence,’ she said.

The agency said in a statement that while its primary mission is anti-terrorism, CBP field officers are tasked with enforcing a wide range of laws.

‘CBP officers are always at ports of entry and assume the responsibility of protecting America from all threats,’ the agency said.
