Boris Johnson blames Corbyn and Khan for Trump’s trip axed

Boris Johnson today tore into Jeremy Corbyn and Sadiq Khan as he blamed the Labour leadership for Donald Trump cancelling his trip to London.

The Foreign Secretary said Labour’s leadership appears ‘determined’ to damage the special relationship and imperil America’s investment in Britain.

And in a colourful dig at Mr Khan, he pledged that the Government will not let the UK’s relationship with its closest ally ‘by some puffed up pompous popinjay in City Hall’.

His remarks come after the Labour London Mayor celebrated news that the US President had pulled out of his planned trip next month saying he had ‘got the message.

While Mr Corbyn has been an outspoken critic of the President and has demanded that the invite for a state visit be axed.

Mr Johnson wrote on Twitter today: ‘The US is the biggest single investor in the UK – yet Khan & Corbyn seem determined to put this crucial relationship at risk.

‘We will not allow US-UK relations to be endangered by some puffed up pompous popinjay in City Hall.’

His remarks came shortly after Mr Khan – who has clashed with the US President on Twitter – celebrated news Mr Trump’s visit to London to open the US embassy in Battersea has been ditched.

Speaking today, Mr Khan said: ‘It appears that President Trump got the message from the many Londoners who love and admire America and Americans but find his policies and actions the polar opposite of our city’s values of inclusion, diversity and tolerance.

‘His visit next month would without doubt have been met by mass peaceful protests.

‘This just reinforces what a mistake it was for Theresa May to rush and extend an invitation of a state visit in the first place.

‘Let’s hope that Donald Trump also revisits the pursuit of his divisive agenda.’

While Mr Corbyn has repeatedly criticised Mr Trump publicly and called for his visit to be axed.

And last year he accused the US President of spreading racist incitement and misogyny’.

And he has accused Mr Trump of threatening world peace through his actions in the Middle East and his rhetoric on North Korea.

He said: ‘President Trump’s speech at the UN General Assembly in September signalled a wider threat to peace.

‘His attack on multilateralism, human rights and international law should deeply trouble us all.

‘And this is no time to reject the Iran nuclear deal, a significant achievement agreed between Iran and a group of world power to reduce tensions.’

Nigel Farage, a friend of the US President, also said Mr Khan and Mr Corbyn are to blame for the trip’s cancellation.

He told the BBC radio 4’s Today Programme: ‘It’s disappointing – he has been to countries all over the world and yet he has not been to the one with whom he is closest.

‘Maybe, just maybe, Sadiq Khan, Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party planning mass protests, maybe those optics he didn’t like the look of.’

Labour MP Chuka Umunna said it was ‘very welcome he is not coming any more’, adding: ‘He runs counter to British values.’
