Boris Johnson lavishes praise on Donald Trump

Boris Johnson today lavished praise on Donald Trump – describing him as ‘one of the huge great global brands’.

The Foreign Secretary said the US leader’s late-night Twitter habit has helped him reach corners of the globe and people ‘few other presidents have ever done’.

He said: ‘I think you’ve got to realise the American President is just one of the huge great global brands – he is penetrating corners of the global consciousness that I think few other presidents have ever done.

‘His method of tweeting early in the morning no matter how rambunctious those tweets may be they are communicating with people.

‘And yes a lot of people don’t like it and a lot of people relate to it. In an age when people have been turned off politics it’s more direct and it’s more communicative than a lot of previous presidents have managed

Mr Trump has sparked controversy and diplomatic after firing off tweets from his social media account.

The President has tweeted out messages to his 42.3million followers mocking North Korean tyrant Kim Jong-Un and branding him a ‘little Rocket man’.

And he has also used the social media account to tear in to his political rivals, including Hillary Clinton.

But he has also sparked outcry in Britain after posting a message in the wake of the London Bridge terror attack which incorrectly said Sadiq Khan told Londoners ‘not to be alarmed’ at the attack.

And he recently blamed radical Islamist terrorism for a rise in crime in England and Wales, whereas in reality it accounts for a tiny proportion of offences.

The Foreign Secretary’s comments, which he made in an interview with Fox News, come as he visits America to hold talks on the Iran nuclear deal.

But his visit has been overshadowed by calls for his to quit his Cabinet post after he made a gaffe which could land a British mother with another five years in prison.

He mistakenly told MPs that Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, 38, was arrested after teaching journalists in the country.

He later tried to clarify his comments saying that she was in the country visiting her parents with her daughter Gabriella.

His statement was seized upon by some parts of the Iranian judiciary, who used it to haul the British mother-of-one back to court to face fresh propaganda charges.

And Iranian state TV said the gaffe that could see a jailed British charity worker given five more years was a bungled ‘confession about her real plot’.

Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe, 38, from Hampstead in north London has been held in prison on spying charges, despite insisting her trip was just a holiday.

After Mr Johnson’s gaffe she was hauled back to court to face new charges of ‘propaganda against the regime’ that could result in her sentence being doubled.

But when he was challenged by press over the remark in the US today he tried to dodge questions.

Asked directly about the Iranian state TV reports, he said: ‘We have some difficult consular cases in Iran and we are working on them.’
