Borussia Dortmund have slammed ‘disrepectful’ Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger for claiming Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would ‘fit in’ at the Premier League club.

The Gabon forward has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal, who are eyeing replacements for Manchester United-bound Alexis Sanchez.

At his press conference on Thursday, Wenger was asked whether Aubameyang would be a good fit for his side and the Frenchman responded: ‘Yes because a character can be very positive and very negative. Overall you look at the achievement of the player over his career.’

But Dortmund have hit back at the Arsenal boss, claiming there is ‘no contact’ between the clubs over a transfer for the 28-year-old.

‘Borussia Dortmund would like to make a statement in response to the comments made by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

‘The coach of the Premier League club said at a press conference on Thursday that the character of the Dortmund forward would fit the Gunners well,’ the statement read.

‘Aubameyang has been linked for some time with a possible switch to Arsenal. On  Thursday, in the run-up to their game against Crystal Palace, Wenger was asked whether he could give an update on the possible transfer for the Dortmund player.’

Michael Zorc, Dortmund’s technical director, then appeared to mock Wenger by suggesting the Frenchman should be more worried about the recent displays of his current crop than discussing Dortmund players.

‘We find it disrespectful to respond to (questions about) players from other clubs,’ Zorc said in a statement.

‘There is no contact with Arsenal. We assume that Arsene Wenger is busy enough with the performance of his own players.’

Arsenal head into this weekend’s clash with Crystal Palace sitting sixth in the table. Wenger’s side are eight points off the top four after defeat by Bournemouth in their last league game.
