A 15-year-old boy is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after being struck in the head with a metal pole in Melbourne’s southeast.

A group of males arrived outside a Cranbourne North home about 12.25am on Thursday. 

Two boys, aged 15, went outside to confront the group as they tried to enter the property, police said.

During the confrontation, one of the boys was struck in the head with a pole before the group fled the scene.

Police are hunting the males who ran from the scene and are now investigating the assault.

SES volunteers were called to the scene just before 3am to provide tarpaulins to prevent bad weather harming any evidence.
