Boy, 16, died after suffering suspected allergic reaction to tomato sauce on takeaway pizza

  • Paramedics rushed him to hospital in critical condition but died four days later
  • Detectives have since sealed off the takeaway while they carry out investigation 

A teenage boy has died after suffering a suspected allergic reaction to tomato sauce on a takeaway pizza.

The 16-year-old, who has been named locally as Nick Kelly, collapsed at Uno Pizza in Prescot, Merseyside, on Saturday.

Paramedics were called to the scene at around midnight before rushing the boy to hospital in a critical condition where he died four days later.

Merseyside Police and Knowsley Council have since launched a joint investigation into the incident with a cordon remaining in place around the fast food outlet. 

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said there had been no arrests and that a post mortem is due to be carried out.

Nick’s father, Chris Kelly, took to Facebook to pay tribute to his son who he said had suffered an allergic reaction to the tomato sauce on a pizza.  

He wrote: ‘Not something I thought I’d ever be writing on here.

‘With deepest regrets Nicholas Kelly was given his angel wings this morning after suffering a massive allergic reaction to some tomato sauce from Uno Pizza and as a result of that he also suffered a massive heart attack.’

And other social media users were quick to pay their condolences.

One, Macie Murray, wrote: ‘Really cannot believe am writing this… Rest in paradise Nicholas Kelly. 

‘My thoughts for your family at this terrible time! 

‘You were the most kind and respectful person I’ve ever met. Your smile would light up a room.

‘I was only with you on Friday and I would of never of thought this would happen. Rest easy up there my mate you will be missed.’

Another added: ‘Poor lad only went for a bite to eat, family need answers here, deepest sympathy to all his family.’

A GoFundMe page which was set up shortly after his death to help cover the funeral costs raised £1,175 before being taken down.

Another has since been created which has so far £160 of a £100 target.
