Boy George hangs up on Fran Kelly during radio interview

He is set to tour Australia with Culture Club this month.

But one Sydney-based interviewer left a bad impression on Boy George on Monday, when he abruptly cancelled their chat mid-way through the conversation.

The 56-year-old hung up the phone on Fran Kelly of ABC Radio National’s Breakfast show when she asked him if his flamboyant style had an ‘impact’ on children.

Speaking with the host about his upcoming tour, George initially began the exchange by fawning over Australia and joking about his fashion style for the shows.

Fran then described him as an artist who became a ‘sensation’ in the 1980s due to the ‘outrageousness’ of his make-up and clothes.

‘I don’t remember if you were openly gay back then but, like David Bowie before you, you were certainly celebrated for being “gender bending”,’ she stated.

‘You keep referring to me in past context and we’re actually talking in real time,’ George snapped.

The seasoned reporter acknowledged his response but reasoned with him that ‘gender bending is not such a surprise [now], but back then it was’.

‘Were you aware of the impact of that on kids?’ she asked the veteran pop star.

After a brief pause, George replied: ‘You’re boring me, goodbye’.

He abruptly hung up and ended the conversation, while a shocked Fran continued to host the program.

Culture Club kick off their Australian tour in Melbourne on November 30 and finish up in Perth on December 9.
