Video footage shows a Bradford defender clearing the ball out of play before Hughes kills it with his instep, juggles it upwards before flicking it to the Owls’ throw-in taker with his heel.

As fans clap vigorously, he raises his arms in mock celebration and smiles before sitting down in the dug-out.

‘Sparky’ also played for Chelsea, Barcelona and Bayern Munich in a distinguished career, before going on to manage Blackburn, Manchester City, Stoke, and Southampton, where he was sacked in December 2018 – his most recent job.

The fourth-tier Bantams beat League One side Wednesday 3-1 thanks to a double from Jake Young and a late strike from Kian Harratt, after Michael Smith had equalised with a first-half penalty.

Hughes’ men now lie second after their first game in the EFL Trophy, behind Burton Albion on goals scored.

Premier League outfit Leicester’s Under-21 side are also in their group.
