Not all heroes wear capes – some carry brooms.
A Chicago teenager has been hailed a hero after he was captured on surveillance video using a garden-variety sweeper to chase off a vicious dog that was trying to maul his young cousins on their way to school.
The incident took place on Monday morning in the Englewood section of the Windy City.
A group of children in Chicago were on their way to school Monday when they were accosted by a vicious dog outside their home
Three of the four kids made it back inside, but 7-year-old Karl Kelly (pictured with a purple backpack) was not as fortunate
The dog, which appears to be a pit bull mix, pulled the child down the stairs and tried to maul it
Jamal Anderson, 13, was getting ready for class when his saw his cousins, who had just left for school, running towards the house with a black-and-white dog hot on their heels.
Three of the kids made it back into the house, but a 7-year-old boy identified by ABC 7 Chicago as named Karl Kelly lingered on the front porch a few seconds too long and was attacked by the animal.
In the video, the dog, which appears to be a pit bull mix, is seen chasing the 50-pound grade-schooler down the front steps, tugging on his backpack, then forcing the boy into a corner and trying to bite his leg.
At that moment, Anderson bursts out of the house, grabs a broom resting on the porch and takes a swing at the attacking dog, thwacking the beast on the back.
The black-and-white dog dog cornered the child and tried to bite his leg (left and right)
Real heroes carry brooms: At that moment, Karl’s 13-year-old cousin, Jamal Anderson, ran outside wielding a broom and came to his rescue
Anderson took a swing with the sweeper as the dog was attacking his young relative
The dog was thwacked on its back and lost its grip of Anderson’s cousin
The powerful strike forced the dog to let go of the young boy, and allowed both him and his 13-year-old cousin to retreat back into the safety of the house.
The dog made an attempt to give chase but was forced to turn tail, having the front door slammed in its snout.
All the children seen in the home surveillance video escaped unharmed.
The family said they have never seen the black-and-white dog in their neighborhood before and do not the identity of its owner.
The brave move allowed both Anderson and his cousin to run back inside the house
