‘I looked in his eyes and there wasn’t anything there’: Brave mother-of-five, 37, relives the horrendous night her ex-husband broke her nose and beat her unconscious in a hotel room after they celebrated his birthday

  • Lucy Mears, 37, was beaten and left unconscious by her husband on his birthday
  • The now divorced couple were in Newcastle when he launched the assault
  • Doctors had never seen such bad facial injuries and say she could have died
  • Her ex-husband handed a 24-month suspended sentence and restraining order

A mother-of-five has spoken of the night her ex-husband looked ‘dead behind his eyes’ as he beat her unconscious in their hotel room.

Lucy Mears, 37, was celebrating her husband’s birthday in Newcastle when a tirade of emotional abuse ended with the violent assault that nearly killed her.

Her now ex-husband was handed a 24-month suspended sentence and a life-time restraining order prevents him from going near Ms Mears and her five children.

Ms Mears, who lives in Wolverhampton and dreams of becoming an underwear model, was left with a broken nose and a bone sticking out of her gum during the attack two years ago.

And a doctor told her if her ex-husband had dealt one more blow to the head she could have died.

‘I had a broken nose, a bone sticking out of my gum and my body was covered in bruises, even after a week they were still coming out,’ she said.

‘I also had to have an MRI scan to check for a bleeds on the brain, I was really lucky.’

After an evening celebrating her husband’s birthday the couple went back to their hotel room, where they were the only people staying on the entire floor.

Later in the night he began a tirade of insults before punching her on her left cheek with such force she nearly fell off the bed, she remembers.

‘I went flying off the bed but I managed to stop myself. I said “don’t ever do that to me again,” so then he hit me and I ended up on the floor where he continued to hit me, kick me in the head and drag me around.

‘It was the first time he had hit me in my face. Normally he would hit me somewhere where I was able to cover it up.

‘I tried to scream for help but we were the only guests staying on that particular floor that night.’

When she tried to beg him to stop he looked at her like ‘he was dead behind his eyes’ before continuing the violent assault.

‘I was on the floor I looked up to him and begged him to stop. I looked in his eyes and there wasn’t anything there. It was like he was dead behind his eyes and that’s the face that haunts me.

‘For months I couldn’t sleep, every time I closed my eyes I just saw that face.’

Ms Mears was knocked unconscious and felt ‘numb’ when she woke up hours later.

‘I couldn’t move but I knew if I stayed there he might kill me.

‘It felt like there was an angel lifting me up, somehow I found the strength to grab the blanket, wrap it around me and drag myself out of the room.

‘I finally made it into the lift and out of the building where there was a group of men who tried to help me. I begged them not to come near me and they called the police for me.’

The next night she was visited by a police officer and decided to press charges.

Ms Mears has now found love with someone else and is entering Miss Swimsuit UK in a bid to get in to the finals and raise her confidence.

‘My ex always told me I was a tramp. I really feel thankful for Verena and Miss Swimsuit UK for giving me this opportunity and the life I’ve got because I never thought I would have even half of it,’ she added.
