Brave swimmers around the world welcome the new year

People across the world have put on their swimsuits, fancy hats and ridiculous costumes to take part in New Year’s Day swims today.

Despite wintry conditions, brave swimmers dove into the water in the Netherlands, Germany, France, China and more.

In Berlin, members of the Berliner Seehunde (Berlin Seals) swimming club wore colourful hats and clown costumes as they ran toward Oranke Lake on Monday morning.

Hundreds of swimmers in Scheveningen, the Netherlands, donned red bobble hats while diving into the North Sea, which had water temperatures of 4C (39F).

In Rome, groups of swimmers took turns diving 59feet (18metres) off of the Cavour Bridge into the Tiber River as hundreds of people watched from the sidelines.

Meanwhile in Dunkirk, France, hundreds of swimmers opted for old-style swimsuits, fake mustaches and wigs for themed group costumes.

And in Beijing, where temperatures were below freezing on Monday morning, a swimmer wearing only a Speedo was seen climbing out of a frozen lake following his dive.
