A thief has been caught on camera trying to steal Christmas decorations from outside a house.

The woman grabs an armful of decorations but then drops them and runs away when someone inside realises what is going on.

The incident happened in Tottenham, north London last night at around 7.45pm when the thief tried to steal four candy cane lights which cost around £19.99.

Mother and nursery worker Jenna Bates posted CCTV footage of the attempt on Facebook saying: ‘I am livid. This woman actually felt she was entitled to come up our garden path and attempt to steal the decorations we have paid for.

She picks them up and turns to leave with them but is then spooked by a noise

‘She saw them and thought she would take them. I mean what the f***?’

The video shows a woman picking up the candy cane lights and slowly dragging them away from the house.

Suddenly a yelling voice is heard off camera which spooks her.

She then drops the candy canes and runs away from the scene before Ms Bates can get to her.

Ms Bates today described her disgust at what she captured on camera.

She said: ‘To be honest I was shocked – we had them out last year and nobody touched them. We always decorate the front of the house with lights in the windows and these candy canes with a ‘Santa Stop Here’ sign.

‘I was alerted to there being motion outside my front door, and I checked the alert to catch her running out the gate so unfortunately I didn’t catch her in the act itself, just the decorations strewn across my front garden path.

‘I am furious that she felt she had the right to attempt to steal our property; that she actually walked along, saw them and thought ‘I’ll take those’.’

She added: ‘I won’t be putting them back out as I don’t want them stolen and it just upsets my five year old to think someone wants to steal Christmas.’

The video has shocked many on social media. Marie-Anne Varela said: ‘I am so angry watching this. You must be seething.’

Tee Duffy-Manning wrote: ‘Absolutely disgusting! What a nerve unbelievable!’

However, one viewer questioned why it was possible for the theft to happen.

Robbie MC said: ‘Yeah she’s a b**** but at the same time it’s the 22nd of November. Why are your Christmas decorations up already?’
