A couple that was once reported missing by their family members in Brazil is now stuck behind bars in Lebanon on drug smuggling charges.
Igor dos Santos, 26, and Juliana Nunes, 31, were taken into custody at Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport on December 19 after they tried to enter the country each carrying half a kilo of cocaine in their stomachs.
Dos Santos and Nunes left from Guarulhos International Airport in São Paulo, Brazil, aboard a Qatar Airways flight that connected in Doha, Qatar.
The pair admitted to Lebanese authorities that they had swallowed the cocaine, but didn’t say who the shipment belonged to.

It’s unknown if they had ingested the cocaine before boarding the flight in Brazil or when they arrived in Qatar.
Dos Santos and Nunes were married in February 2022 according to Brazilian news outlet G1.
Their families became concerned when they traveled from Carazinho, Rio Grande do Sul to São Paulo to go shopping on December 13.
They arrived in São Paulo on December 14 and kept in contact until December 18, when they ceased communications with their loved ones.

Their family reported them missing December 28 and learned the next day of their legal troubles in Lebanon.
Dos Santos’ mother, Claudete dos Santos, blamed Nunes for cutting off all lines of communication and said that her son was not used to making long distance trips.
‘He is not a criminal,’ she told RBS TV. ‘I swear by all that is most sacred that my son is not a criminal, he is not a criminal.’
