Breakfast Club actor Anthony Michael Hall has pleaded no contest to shoving a neighbor who fell and broke his wrist
Breakfast Club actor Anthony Michael Hall has pleaded no contest to shoving a neighbor who fell and broke his wrist.
The 49-year-old Hall entered the plea in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Wednesday to one misdemeanor count of assault likely to produce injury.
He was immediately sentenced to 40 hours of community service and three years of informal probation.
Prosecutors say Hall and a next-door neighbor in Playa Del Rey got into an argument in September 2016 that ended with Hall pushing the man, Richard Samson, to the ground.
The entire incident was filmed on closed-circuit surveillance footage.
In January of this year, Samson filed a lawsuit against Hall.
In the lawsuit, he accuses the actor of assault, battery, intentional inflection of emotional distress, negligent inflection of emotional distress, and negligence.
Samson claims in his lawsuit that he was confronted by Hall ‘in a rude or intimidating manner’ in their complex’s common area, and also accused him of ‘offensive touching.’
The lawsuit also claims Hall ‘assaulted, intimidated and battered’ the plaintiff.
This resulted in Samson being left ‘hurt and injured in his health, strength and activities’, claims the suit.
‘Plaintiff also sustained injuries to his nervous system and person, all of which have caused and continues to cause Plaintiff great mental, physical, emotional and nervous pain and suffering,’ reads the suit.
Samson told People of the incident in late November: ‘He [Hall] got into a tussle with someone else in the complex. I heard yelling out my front door and walked out to see what was going on.
Hall, 49, is best known for his role in the 1980s John Hughes-directed teen hit The Breakfast Club. He is seen above in the center alongside cast mates from the film, including, left to right, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, and Molly Ringwald
”I told him, “You need to calm down.” Within two seconds, he was in my face and said some very unpleasant things to me. He then shoved me and I fell to the ground.’
Samson says upon impact he ‘heard and felt’ his wrist break.
Hall was charged in November with felony assault causing serious bodily injury.
It’s not the first time either that Hall has been engaged in disputes with his fellow condo residents.
Back in 2011, TMZ says, his neighbors claimed he would scream obscenities and challenge people to fights.
He most recently appeared in the Netflix film War Machine alongside Brad Pitt
Hall’s big break came at age 13 when he was tapped to play Rusty Griswold in the 1985 comedy classic National Lampoon’s Vacation with Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo.
He went on to star in the hit movies Sixteen Candles with Molly Ringwald in 1984 followed by The Breakfast Club in 1985, with Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Ringwald.
He has continued to work steadily in movies and television, most recently having a recurring role in season three of Murder In the First and Ben Affleck’s upcoming movie Live By Night.
He most recently appeared in the Netflix film War Machine alongside Brad Pitt.
Hall also had roles in The Dark Knight and the TV series The Dead Zone.
