Brendan Rodgers ‘is in the running to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United boss’ should the under-fire manager fail to turn things around after Liverpool thrashing

  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s job is at risk following the 5-0 thrashing by Liverpool
  • His job is safe for now though the club are assessing alternative options
  • Former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was said to be favourite if Solskjaer left
  • It has now been reported that Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers has overtaken Conte
  • There would be a mixed reaction given his prior links to rivals Liverpool

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers is reportedly being eyed by Manchester United as a potential successor for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Solskjaer is currently under immense pressure to turn United’s fortunes around after a miserable start to the season.

The club have opted to stick with the Norwegian for now despite their humiliating 5-0 loss to Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.

United’s next three games against Tottenham, Atalanta and Manchester City are likely to determine Solskjaer’s fate.

ESPN have now reported that Rodgers, despite his past links to Liverpool, is now ahead of Antonio Conte in the race to replace Solskjaer.

The current Leicester boss was the manager at Anfield between June 2012 and October 2015 – a spell in which he narrowly missed out on delivering Liverpool’s first Premier League title in the 2013-14 season.

Conte had been seen as the favourite to replace Solskjaer but ESPN now have Rodgers ahead, while the likes of Zinedine Zidane and Ajax’s Erik ten Hag have also been linked.

There would likely be a mixed reaction should United hire Rodgers if they decide to sack Solskjaer.

Angry fans of the club have reacted to the news on social media side Reddit with one fan saying: ‘If it happens I quit.’

They then added: ‘Wasn’t good enough for them (Liverpool) so sounds perfect for this moronic board.’

Another user commented: ‘It’ll be David Moyes all over again. Good manager but some jobs are too big for some people. Let’s not keep making the same mistakes.

‘Plus would you really want to hire a manager that managed Liverpool for a good amount of time?’

Somebody else posted to the news: ‘He’s not even that good. Man’s bottled a title once and top 4 twice. Clearly not the best under pressure.

‘They can’t possibly be stupid enough to think hiring an ex Liverpool manager is a good idea. Nvm (nevermind) they’re actually that stupid I won’t be surprised.’

Ethan_MUFC posted: ‘Good coach no doubt but f*** off. We’ve just been humiliated by the Scousers so we’re gonna go and hire the guy they sacked to appoint Klopp?’

There were however some that were not too concerned over the possibility of having a former Liverpool manager in charge.

One person brought up Sir Matt Busby who became a Manchester United legend having previously played for Liverpool.

While another user posted: ‘I mean I would take (Jurgen) Klopp in a heartbeat if he leaves tomorrow.’
