A 13-year-old girl wants to confront in court the man who subjected her to a horrific five-hour ordeal after she was abducted while walking to school in Newcastle and repeatedly raped at three separate locations.

Prosecutor Lee Carr SC told the Newcastle District Court the girl wanted to read her victim impact statement in front of Brett David Hill, 49, during his sentence hearing.

Mr Carr on Tuesday said the teenager had asked if she could read her statement in the courtroom – rather than a remote location – with a comfort dog by her side.

The hearing had been scheduled to begin at 10am on Tuesday but was delayed because the prison van carrying Hill from Sydney to Newcastle was late.

Judge Roy Ellis said he would watch a pre-recorded video interview between police and the girl conducted in May before Hill arrived.

Mr Carr said the recorded interview showed the girl demonstrating what had happened to her, including having ‘hands around her throat’.

Hill, 49, has admitted grabbing the then 11-year-old girl as she walked to school in Adamstown Heights, Newcastle, and sexually assaulting her in June 2018.

Hill pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated kidnapping, seven counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child under 16 and one count of possessing child abuse material.

Three other counts of aggravated indecent assault and one count of aggravated sexual assault were withdrawn as a result of Hill’s guilty pleas.

Hill had been armed with a pair of scissors when he abducted the girl as she walked through Hudson Park at Adamstown Heights about 9.15am on June 12 in 2018.

He spent the next five hours sexually and indecently assaulting the girl before releasing her at Kotara railway station.

The charges of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault each carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in jail.
