A man is in a critical condition after he fell into a hole and became buried in sand on a popular island north of Brisbane.

Emergency services were called to Bribie Island shortly before 2pm on Saturday and could only access the scene via the beach.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed paramedics were still treating the patient at the scene two hours later.

The man is in a critical condition.

The RACQ Lifeflight helicopter and a rescue critical care doctor were deployed to provide assistance.

The man has since been airlifted to Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital in actitical condition.

No other details are available at this early stage. 

 Bribie Island is the smallest and most northerly of three major sand islands forming the coastline sheltering the northern part of Moreton Bay.
