A bride and groom created a retro crisp wall for their wedding guests featuring 90’s favourites like Discos and Space Raiders.

Philip, 47, and Michelle O’ Mahony, 41, from Peterborough, tied the knot last weekend in the East Midlands, after COVID forced them to cancel their nuptials on two previous occasions.

Eager to make their big day one to remember, the pair came up with the idea to create a retro crisp wall for guests to snack on throughout the evening. 

Michelle said she came up with the idea after she saw a photo of a similar set up online.

She said they wanted to ‘feature flavours and types [of crisps] you had as a child that you don’t always see in shops today.’

The snacks proved popular with both the wedding guests and Twitter users after the snap of the crisp wall raked up over 43,000 likes. 

The snap went viral after it was posted by @sarahjane792, who had been sent it by a friend in attendance.

She wrote: ‘My mate went to a wedding today where they had a crisp wall’.

Speaking to the Mail Online Michelle revealed not many people realised the crisp wall was in the room until later in the evening.

She said: ‘It was at the end of the room near the evening buffet and dance floor. It wasn’t really touched most of the day, I don’t think people realised what it was.

‘At the end of the evening when guests left the party it soon cleared as people left to go back to hotel rooms.’

The newlyweds were shocked to hear their crisp wall had gone viral the next morning.

Michelle said: ‘We didn’t realise it had gone viral until the next day when a guest told us, and we have been getting messages ever since.’

She continued: ‘Lots of people had shared pictures of the day and are now re sharing pictures of the shares and likes saying they attended the wedding of the famous crisp wall.’ 

Twitter users had divided opinions on the quirky crisp wall and many started to debate the idea in the comments 

Some people took to Twitter to praise the idea with one person saying: ‘What a good idea. Weddings I’ve been to, bride and groom p**s off to some picturesque location for photos, leaving guests hanging around for hours, sans refreshments, waiting for the reception.’

Another said: ‘That’s a brilliant idea. Especially for all the children. Imagine all the white clothing. I’m going to steal that and might have a chocolate wall as well.’

Others didn’t think crisps had any place at a wedding with one person commenting: ‘Might be a better idea just to make sure people have got drinks and canapés to stave off the hunger rather than greasy, salty junk food which would be a disaster for any silk clothes. Crisps have a place in life .. inside a pub or trucker’s cab … not at a wedding.’ 

Others didn’t think crisps had any place at a wedding with one person calling it ‘ghastly’ and a ‘tasteless racket’

Another said: ‘That’s pretty ghastly imo. Sorry. Kind of hate weddings and people’s quirky, statements that they inflict on the guests. Simple small weddings..nice.But it’s become tasteless racket.’

One person said: ‘Dear me, the wedding buffets have really gone down since I last went to a wedding.’ 

However guests had plenty to choose from on the couple’s big day which Michelle later clarified.  

Speaking to Newsweek she said: ‘We had a savory salty bar when guests arrived. We had a sit-down three-course dinner. A sweet table, donut wall and an evening buffet along with wedding cake.’
