Brighton man ‘smashes driver in the head with steering wheel lock’

A man hit on the head with a steering-wheel lock was arrested today after a road rage shouting match turned violent.

The fight unfolded on the streets of Brighton outside of a Co-op, with horrified pedestrians watching on helplessly as the two men argued.

Security guards from a nearby fast food outlet intervened and both men involved in the fight were arrested by police.

One, a 39-year-old, was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The other man, aged 37-years-old, from London, was arrested on suspicion of affray, police revealed. 

A Co-op employee, who did not want to be identified, said: ‘It [the lock] cracked his head open and he bled everywhere. There were security guards from McDonald’s who ran over and sorted it out.’

Shopkeeper, Mohammed Haque, aged 37 years, said: ‘One was very badly injured on the top of his head and seemed to have been hit with something.

‘They were bleeding on the main road, The police came, as well as two ambulances. The officers were there for hours, with four police cars on the road.’

Police attended the scene on London Road, Brighton, East Sussex at 7.50 pm on Saturday evening and set up a cordon to investigate what had happened in the ruckus.

Detective Sergeant Donna Ward said: ‘This was an isolated incident between two vehicles.

‘The two cars were involved in a road rage incident and this has subsequently lead to a physical altercation.

‘We believe there was a bus going past the two vehicles at the time of the incident. We are appealing for anyone on that bus or members of the public walking past to come forward with any information they may have.’

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: ‘Our officers were called to London Road around 7.50 pm on Saturday April 21 following an altercation between the occupants of two vehicles.

‘One of the men exited his vehicle and approached the second car and both a verbal and physical altercation occurred.

‘A 37-year-old man from London was hit in the head with, what was believed to be, a steering wheel lock. He suffered serious but not life threatening or changing head injuries and was taken to hospital.

‘A 39-year-old man from London has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent. A 37-year-old man from London was arrested on suspicion of affray.

‘Both men remain in custody and the investigation is ongoing.’
