NRL star Darius Boyd has urged his teammates to adopt a vegan diet after being inspired by a documentary.

The Brisbane Broncos captain, 32, adopted a meat-free diet following the 2019 season after watching a Netflix documentary called The Game Changers.

A number of Boyd’s Broncos teammates are now shunning meat after watching the film produced by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The Game Changers, released in 2018, looks into the benefits of a plant-based diet adopted by athletes around the world.

Australian female 800-metre runner Morgan Mitchell is among the sports stars who feature in the documentary.

Broncos coach Anthony Seibold also watched the film during a flight to America after being encouraged by Boyd, The Courier-Mail reported.

Despite his teammates dropping meat, Broncos wing Corey Oates says he will continue to eat beef and chicken.

‘No chance for me [of being] vegan,’ Oates said.

‘I can’t see forwards like Patty Carringan or Tevita (Pangai Jr) doing it long term. Tevita loves meat too much, he’s no chance.

‘I don’t know how long it will last, especially when we are getting flogged in the Brisbane heat.’

Other Australian vegan sport stars include cricketer Peter Siddle, St George Illawarra Dragons prop Mitchell Allgood and NSW Blues Origin coach Brad Fittler.
