Brisbane mum-of-three, 48, launches a kids cosmetics range

Kelly Ferguson’s two daughters Isabella, 12, and Pascale, 10, loved playing with their mother’s make up.

The only issue is they would break the palettes and accidentally spill the powders around the bathroom sink.

So the Brisbane mother-of-three, 48, decided to create her own children’s cosmetic range, called Kooki U, so her creative daughters – and other kids just like them – could have a way of experimenting without damaging pricey products.

‘They started dancing at a young age, namely ballet, which required them to wear make up like red lips, mascara and blush,’ Kelly told the Daily Mail Australia.

‘From that moment forward they started using my make up, ruining it, breaking it… something I wasn’t very happy about. But there were no kids brands out there aimed at fun and play.’

While her own daughters have shown an interest because of their desire to perform on stage, other young girls are turning to cosmetics because of YouTube videos and tutorials they watch online.

But Kelly is adamant the choice for children to wear make up should be an individual decision for each family.

‘We want kids who are having fun and experimenting with make up to have something to use. I wouldn’t call this an everyday range at all – it’s for occasional play use and involves neutral colours for that reason,’ she said.

Kooki U sells Australian-made foundations, contour cream palettes, lipstick, lip gloss, eyebrow powder as an affordable price point – with many of the products less than $15.

They also create colourful bath bombs and and body moisturisers – much like you’d buy at Lush.

'A lot of the products are either clear or only lightly pigmented - with some of the lip stains offering more of a shade. So it gives the little ones a feeling of being grown up without looking older than they are,' Kelly said
