Brisbane neighbours at war over the construction of a 2.5metre fence

A angry homeowner’s rant about a 2.5metre fence constructed by her neighbour has backfired after Aussies said she should be ‘grateful’.

The Brisbane resident took to Reddit on Thursday asking for urgent advice.

‘Our neighbour has removed our shared fence, with no communication or notice to us. They are then building a new 2.5metre fence, which is impeding light into our house,’ the fed-up homeowner wrote.

‘The neighbour has cited that they are doing this to ensure their dogs are contained however they have not replaced the shorter fences in their yard, and only built a ‘barricade’ type fence along part of our fence line.

‘Brisbane City Council has advised they can’t do anything as the neighbour will just need to get the fence certified for it to comply.

‘Qld State has advised that we can take them to QCAT (the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal), however this may take several months.’

The homeowner said negotiations with their neighbour had reached a stalemate.

‘I have tried to speak very politely to the neighbour but I got nowhere. I have asked them to pause works until we can reach a mutual agreement and we would even consider contributing to the costs,’ she said.

The neighbour who constructed the new fence said she had tried to organise a new fence for years.

‘Over Christmas the fence was falling down and I had to get someone in urgently,’ she told news.com.au.

‘We spoke to council, council said go ahead and build it, worry about the certification afterwards.’

The woman said she had a strained relationship with her neighbour due to her dogs.

‘The only reason for that high one was because her text messages and letters were about the dogs, but to be honest it’s kind of nice not to have to look into their place,’ she said.

Aussies were quick to criticise the homeowner with one commenter suggesting she ‘count her lucky stars’.

‘You are being given a fence, that will keep you safe and not having to pay. You should be overjoyed,’ one said.

‘I’m more shocked he hasn’t asked for any cash, be super grateful.’

‘So their dogs got out and have attacked you so the neighbour fronts the full cost of a new fence to stop this happening against you and even puts the fence all back on his side and you’re complaining lmao,’ a second said.

‘Yeah take it to QCAT and get forced into 50% of the costs.’

‘Not going to lie, the new fence looks better, offers more privacy and is free. I’d be counting my lucky stars, a third wrote.

‘Your fence wasn’t really cutting it fence wise. This is better. Take the free fence,’ a third suggested.

‘Why would you be against this the fence looks great and provides even more privacy and you don’t even have to pay a thing!’ a fourth said.

However, others were more sympathetic to the homeowner.

‘OP’s main complaint is the lack of light in their house now. A valid complaint that a lot of people here are overlooking,’ one wrote.

Responding to the comments, the homeowner said they would ‘happily foot the bill’ to replace the fence with a ‘waist-height fence to provide us with great natural light’.
